Abstract

The rehabilitation and retrofitting of a building requires an appreciation for the technical, economic and social aspects of the issue. choosing the optimal solution depends on a large variety of criteria, the most important being the total cost, the construction time (eventually with the possibility of continuous usage of the building), the ease of technological application etc. the first part of this paper briefly presents classic and modern rehabilitation/retrofitting technologies. It is recognized that the most effective method of reducing the risk of damaging structure is seismic retrofitting .The second part represents as study case of a multi storey building retrofitting that how the effect of the earthquake on the structure can be reduced by providing base Isolation technique. Then we went for column resizing in which we increased the size of column in X and Z direction. In this we made different cases and used hit and trail method to make the building serviceable and strong enough to bear the additional load of the vertical expansion without significant increase in the percentage of steel in column. In addition we have carried out the designing/redesigning of structures for its vertical expansion by providing retrofitting method like jacketing of structures and also providing additional reinforcement and also by providing shear walls. We studied and gave recommendations to make structure safe and to avoid disaster.
