Abstract

Synchronization of electronic systems has become more important as the requirement for more accurate time measurements has increased. This is especially true for systems with distributed nodes that must collaborate to perform some task, such as sensor data fusion operations, coordinated actuation and power efficient duty cycling. Also, as the requirement for measurement accuracy increases so does the difficulty involved in keeping the various parts of a network synchronized. This chapter gives a review of the need for synchronization, the difficulties encountered when trying to synchronize a distributed network along with Computer Clocks and the Synchronization Problem. Challenges for Time Synchronization are also discussed.
